I got my first job when I was in high school as a Chinese and piano tutor. Not only did I save up a decent amount of money, but I also thought it was rewarding as I’d helped many young kids hone their language skills and improve their musical abilities. But to my surprise, I also learned that while I was tutoring others, I was in fact reinforcing my knowledge of the subject on hand. Now, that’s a win-win situation!
Currently, I’m a second-year student studying Biomedical Science at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. Over the years, I’ve developed a keen interest in biomedical research and I want to make a contribution in bettering the public health system in my country.
Because tutoring has become an integral part of me, even with the busy schedule at school, I still make time to help my peers in Biology and Chemistry. As things became more hectic, one of my local students recommended that we use TutorOcean to track our sessions, payments, and conduct online sessions (which is quite convenient because we no longer have to be stuck in traffic, plus, we save gas money and time!). The setup was a breeze and their support team was very helpful during the on-boarding process. Soon, my students and I were using the TutorOcean platform to communicate and interact with each other. A lot of things are automated so we can focus on teaching and learning, instead of trying to keep track of our sessions and such. Also, TutorOcean makes analytics and reports of tutoring sessions available to both tutors and students/parents. This helps to hold both parties accountable and better understand each other’s expectations.
As I also tutor Spanish, a student from the U.S. and one from Australia contacted me recently and inquired about Spanish lessons. Of course, as we live miles away from each other, we use the TutorOcean online classroom to conduct tutoring sessions. Not only are all the features in the online classroom easy to use, but the way that it’s designed make my students and I feel that we’re in the same room. How cool is that! I always feel like I can look over my students’ shoulders in real-time and offer pointed instruction just like in-person tutoring.
Through the TutorOcean global platform, I’ve also met some incredible people around the world. For instance, the American student who is taking Spanish lessons with me is in fact a mom in her forties, who was looking to improve her Spanish because her family often travels to Spanish-speaking countries and she would like to be able to better communicate with the locals. While my Australian student is currently studying Spanish at university and hopes to go to Uruguay, South America, to continue his studies. We have a special lesson plan because he is dyslexic and asked that we go at a slower pace. I think he’s a really hard-working student, and I’m so glad that I get to help him achieve his goal!

I am currently a third-year student at the University of Otago studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (BBiomedSci), majoring in Functional Human Biology. I studied IGCSE and the IB Diploma in middle and high school, so I am very familiar with the curriculums, offering tuition to IB, IGCSE, and NCEA students in Biology and Chemistry over the last 2-3 years.
