My name is Will and I’m the Co-founder and CEO of TutorOcean.
As a child my heroes were Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. I desperately wanted to develop the same strength and skills they had. At age eight I convinced my parents to let me attend a special martial arts and acrobatics academy for youth full time. I learned about grace, determination, balance and perseverance. I was good at it — I won local and provincial championships and I kept pushing myself to do more, to jump higher, to go further. But after 5 years at the school fate caught up with my daring. I had a few major injuries and broke my ankle, knees and elbow.
So at age thirteen, I had to return to regular school but I was so far behind academically there was no way I could succeed.
To help me return to regular school, I was incredibly lucky to have been supported by two inspiring tutors. They helped me to learn in six months what it took the regular school program five years to cover. They instilled in me a love of learning, confidence, wisdom and drive to chase my ambitions.
I was hooked on the power of tutoring. While in university, I became a math and science tutor, and discovered how well 1-on-1 learning works for students. I realized that finding the right tutor nearby, can be very difficult – and vice versa. I found that a good tutor is also a mentor and as such, it’s a relationship that goes beyond simply subject-matter expertise. I also found that traveling to students’ homes took so much time and effort. Even then I thought, why can’t I do this online?. That is what led me to start TutorOcean. I want to help others who suffered through similar challenges.
I want to connect those with a thirst for knowledge and understanding with tutors who can help them acquire it — no matter where they are in the world. I hope you will join us on our mission.
Sincerely,
Will
