To empower people to share knowledge with those who are keen to learn
What is TutorOcean
TutorOcean is a global tutoring marketplace and supplemental learning platform. Don't let the name fool you - tutors can be teachers, instructors, professors, coaches, advisors and much more. TutorOcean enables learners and tutors to connect anytime and anywhere. Through our intuitive and integrated online classroom, collaborative whiteboard technology, live video and more - tutors are able to cultivate the internal motivation and potential of learners, and thus help them achieve their goals. It's a place where connection is made instantly, knowledge is shared and acquired in real-time, and community is created while breaking geographical boundaries.
Universal access to knowledge should be a right and not a privilege. However, bright, creative and ambitious people often lack resources or access to the help they need to be able to achieve self-actualization, or contribute to their communities. Then there are people who want to share their knowledge and skills, yet lack the channel and tools to connect with others. TutorOceans' mission is to create these connections, and empower people to share their knowledge with others, and together realize their dreams.
Proudly Canadian, TutorOcean is thriving in a country that has the highest percentage of university and college graduates in the world. Canada is also a place where old school tutoring often meant braving -30C. So, obviously people are looking for a reliable alternative. This is where we come in. We hope to make tutoring more accessible, affordable and personalized for those with a thirst for knowledge, no matter where they are in the world.
My name is Will and I’m the Co-founder and CEO of TutorOcean.
As a child my heroes were Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. I desperately wanted to develop the same strength and skills they had. At age eight I convinced my parents to let me attend a special martial arts and acrobatics academy for youth full time. I learned about grace, determination, balance and perseverance. I was good at it — I won local and provincial championships and I kept pushing myself to do more, to jump higher, to go further. But after 5 years at the school fate caught up with my daring. I had a few major injuries and broke my ankle, knees and elbow.
So at age thirteen, I had to return to regular school but I was so far behind academically there was no way I could succeed.
To help me return to regular school, I was incredibly lucky to have been supported by two inspiring tutors. They helped me to learn in six months what it took the regular school program five years to cover. They instilled in me a love of learning, confidence, wisdom and drive to chase my ambitions.
I was hooked on the power of tutoring. While in university, I became a math and science tutor, and discovered how well 1-on-1 learning works for students. I realized that finding the right tutor nearby, can be very difficult – and vice versa. I found that a good tutor is also a mentor and as such, it’s a relationship that goes beyond simply subject-matter expertise. I also found that traveling to students’ homes took so much time and effort. Even then I thought, why can’t I do this online?. That is what led me to start TutorOcean. I want to help others who suffered through similar challenges.
I want to connect those with a thirst for knowledge and understanding with tutors who can help them acquire it — no matter where they are in the world. I hope you will join us on our mission.
